Am I Nima fossil: the rock in Mom’s basement
What the fossil in Am I Nima's demo is, which word combinations unlock it, and why every fossil answer ends with the lobotomy.

Table of Contents
The fossil is the second item Mom puts on the table during the demo's item test — a chunk of rock with an opalised skeleton inside, cracked open like an egg. It is the thing she spent the summer working on in the basement lab, and it is the last object the demo's Chapter 2 sequence lets you respond to. Whatever word you throw at it, the scene ends the same way: an argument, a failed test, and Mom deciding you are not Nima. That is why "Am I Nima fossil" searches usually turn into the same question the Steam Community hub thread asks outright — whether the Life/Fossil chapter can be finished without the lobotomy.
The short answer, as far as the demo goes: no clean route has been reported. The demo build that players wrote about and recorded ends the fossil test with the ice pick and the darkness, then loops back to "Nima? Is that you?" The full game is a different matter — HO! Games' 5 September update on the Steam Community hub says the demo covered Chapter 1 and half of Chapter 2, and that the finished game spreads over 15+ tests in 5 chapters with 13 endings.
What the fossil is in the story
In the demo, Mom hesitates before she shows it to you, then pushes it across the table and asks what it reminds you of. The memory that comes with it is not a story but a summer: you at the top of the basement stairs, watching her bent over the rock, being told firmly to leave every time you interrupted. She called you her lab assistant, and the job turned out to be cooking and cleaning while she worked. The fossil is the wedge between mother and daughter before the accident ever happened.
The item test itself gives the fossil a name. Players who pushed the word combinations around it report the creature is identified as a Burgess Shale arthropod — the theory video Fish, Fossils & Fear renders it as "Mela splendens", and transcripts of the demo vary on the spelling, so treat the exact form as unsettled until you see it on screen. Combine the fossil with words like home and the game reportedly returns Burgess Shale.

Words the fossil unlocks
Two combinations are worth knowing before you sit down at that table:
- Life + fossil → Obsession. The Fish, Fossils & Fear video calls this the only way to produce the word and notes it arrives locked, so it cannot be merged with anything else. It is also the most revealing thing you can say about the rock.
- Fossil + home → Burgess Shale, the deposit the fossil came out of.
The word fossil itself can be picked up during the bedroom section of the demo, alongside the books and posters that feed the same corner of the word library. If you have not found it before the second interrogation starts, the item test will hand it to you anyway — but you will not have Obsession ready, and that costs you the best version of the scene.
The three ways the fossil test goes
A playthrough video and the Fish, Fossils & Fear theory video both walk through the same three approaches:
- "Your work" — answering with words like Nima or work. Nima accuses her mother of wasting the summer in the dark while ignoring her, and Mom fires back that all this work was to fix the family. It ends with "You're not Nima. Nima would never question me like this."
- "Your love" — answering with Obsession. Nima says the fossil is her mother's one true love, blames her for the river, and gets more exposition for her trouble: Mom says she dropped chemical engineering to study palaeontology. Same ending.
- "Why would you show me this?" — answering with Trapped. This is the loudest version. Nima rocks in the chair, fights the urge to take the rock and use it, then screams for a neighbour to hear that she is being held in the basement. Nobody comes; Mom gags her and injects a syringe.
Every route ends with you restrained in bed, Mom mentioning she did not use enough anaesthetic, and the pick going in. The Creeping for Scale Models demo write-up puts it plainly: no matter what word you choose for the fossil, it puts you in conflict with Annabelle.

Why players think the rock matters so much
The theory video's reading is that the fossil is not just a motif but the mechanism of the plot. It links the Burgess Shale's famously well-preserved soft tissue to Mom's experiments, and points at the word chains the game allows — Marrella (the fossil's creature) combined with mom giving guilt and experiment, Marrella with Nima giving rebirth, Nima with rebirth giving monster, and monster with Marrella giving parasite. That is one player's reconstruction from a demo, not an announced plot summary, and the video's author says so himself. What the demo does confirm on its own is that the fossil is the object Mom cannot stop talking about and the thing she keeps in the room where she keeps you.
Practical notes
- Save yourself the trouble and build the word library before the second interrogation. The demo gives you a bedroom full of objects for exactly this reason; arriving at the fossil test with only the basic words leaves you choosing between arguments you have already had.
- If you want the most information per run, spend your first interrogation's three questions on death, fear and pain — they set up the hospital and coma material that the fossil conversation later leans on.
- The lobotomy is not a failure state you can dodge in the demo, so treat each run as a lap rather than a run you ruined. The dialogue loop back to the basement is the point.
- The full game adds a favouriting system, an available-choices filter and a word-history screen, per the developer's 5 September Steam post. Those are announced features, not something the demo has, so do not go looking for them in the demo build.
- As of 2026-10-18, that same Steam Community hub post lists the release date as 27 November 2026, moved back from the 8 October 2026 date announced in the developer's earlier June post. Demo-era word combinations may not survive into the release unchanged.
