Am I Nima Demo: What Chapter One Actually Plays Like
A player-facing guide to the Am I Nima demo: the word-combining puzzles, how hard the tests are, Steam Deck quirks, and where the chapter ends.

Table of Contents
The Am I Nima demo is a free Steam download from HO! Games that covers the opening chapter of a psychological horror game built around word puzzles. You wake as Nima Lee, strapped to a chair in a basement, while your mother Annabelle Lee decides whether you really are her daughter. You answer her by assembling words instead of picking dialogue lines from a list.
As of Quest Daily's preview published 2025-06-11, the demo was downloadable on Steam, and that writer found it through Steam Next Fest. A playthrough write-up on Creeping for Scale Models from 2025-03-07 describes finding it on Steam and finishing the chapter.
What the demo covers
The structure is short and linear. You start tied up in the basement and talk your way through a first meal, then get carried to your bedroom and are free to explore, then return to the table for a "memory test" with two objects. The demo ends on a scripted scene rather than a choice.
One playthrough video notes that the demo edition is labelled as chapter one of the full game. That is a player's reading of what the demo itself says, not a separately published roadmap.

How the word system works
You begin with two words — Nima and Stranger — and everything else has to be earned. Clicking objects in a room surfaces new words, and combining words in your "brain" unlocks further ones. Quest Daily describes the layout as a glossary on the left, the active brain area on the right, and a bin for words you have too many of; dragging a word down to Nima speaks it aloud. Creeping for Scale Models notes the same combine-to-unlock loop and adds that unlocked words also open different dialogue options.
Practical consequence: exploration is the real progression. The bedroom is where a large share of the vocabulary sits, so clicking through the room before you go back to Annabelle matters more than rushing the conversation.
Difficulty, and why you keep dying
Quest Daily's writer played the demo several times and died every time, calling it tough and possibly unforgiving, while wondering whether dying is the point. That is a fair warning rather than a verdict — the same writer also admits to being bad at word puzzles.
Two things soften that. First, Creeping for Scale Models got through the chapter and reports that the fossil test pushes you into conflict with Annabelle no matter which word you choose, so that confrontation is not a mistake you can avoid. Second, both accounts describe the same closing scene, which suggests reaching the end of chapter one lands you in the same place regardless of how well the conversation went.

Platform notes
Quest Daily tried it first on Steam Deck and found the UI did not line up properly, recommending a regular PC at that stage. Creeping for Scale Models had the demo launch heavily zoomed in, suspected the cause was on their own end, and fixed it without further problems. If the same happens to you, checking your display resolution and any per-game scaling settings is a reasonable first step; that is general troubleshooting, not a documented in-game option.
Spoiler and content warning
The demo's final scene is abrupt and violent, and the story leans on memory loss, medical experimentation and a deeply uncomfortable mother-daughter dynamic. Both write-ups spoil the ending in detail, so read them after playing if you want the chapter to land cold.
Full game status
The Quest Daily preview published 2025-06-11 notes there was no release date at that point, and Creeping for Scale Models said the same in its 2025-03-07 post. For anything newer, the official Steam page for Am I Nima is the place to check.
