Am I Nima mom: Who Is Annabelle Lee?

In the Am I Nima demo, Nima's mom is Annabelle Lee, the scientist holding her in the basement. Here's what players learn and how her memory tests work.

Nima's mom is Annabelle Lee, the woman who asks “Nima, is that you?” when Nima wakes tied to a chair in the basement. She presents herself as Nima's mother and says Nima was hurt in a swimming accident, but she also keeps Nima locked up and runs memory tests on her. That is the setup of the Am I Nima demo/Chapter 1 from HO! Games; this page sticks to what the demo and community playthroughs show.

Spoiler note: this covers the demo's ending.

What Mom does in the demo

The two linked playthroughs and Creeping for Scale Models' demo write-up agree on the main beats:

  • She frames confinement as care. Annabelle says there was an accident, that Nima's memories may be affected, and that the basement is a “controlled environment” for Nima to heal in. She claims Nima almost drowned while swimming and hit her head on a rock.
  • She tests Nima with objects. She brings Nima food, then a shark plush from an aquarium trip, then a fossil. Each time she asks what the item makes Nima feel and writes notes on the answers.
  • She is a researcher. Nima's memories show Annabelle spending the summer working on the fossil and calling Nima her “lab assistant,” while Nima did the cooking and cleaning.
  • She turns when challenged. If Nima questions the accident story or the summer spent in the basement, Annabelle insists Nima is not acting like her daughter. In the demo's final scene she straps Nima down, says the anesthesia wore off, and attacks her with a pick before the screen cuts to black.

Is she really Nima's mom?

The demo presents Annabelle as Nima's mother, but it also wants you to distrust her. Nima has a memory of Annabelle standing over her with a knife, and a diary clue warns not to trust the woman and to kill her. Creeping for Scale Models reads those clues as evidence that Annabelle is using Nima as a lab subject, possibly connected to the fossil; that is a player theory, not something the demo confirms.

Practical tips for the mom sections

  • Use the word library before you answer. The opening gives you words such as Nima and Stranger, and the word Mom becomes part of the dialogue puzzle. A Steam community thread notes that players can unlock a long chain of words from the opening pair before advancing, so experimenting early is worthwhile.
  • Call her Mom when the option appears. The demo's internal voice reminds you to call her Mom, and the main line of the scene assumes you are playing the daughter she wants to see.
  • Give her the memory she is fishing for. The shark plush, for example, is tied to nostalgia and love. Creeping for Scale Models notes that the fossil prompt puts Nima in conflict with Annabelle no matter which word you choose, so expect that argument rather than a clean answer.
  • Explore the bedroom before knocking. Objects in the room unlock more words and dialogue options. The bathroom is locked, and the prompt to lock Annabelle in passes too quickly to work in the demo, according to the same write-up.
  • Don't expect to talk your way out of the ending. Both linked playthroughs reach the same violent final scene, so it reads as the demo's ending rather than a branch you can avoid.
