Nima is the protagonist — the character you play. In Am I Nima, a psychological-horror game from developer HO! Games, you are Nima: a girl who has lost her memories and wakes up trapped in her mother's basement. The title is not a riddle about a separate character; it is the question the game keeps asking you, because your mother is testing whether you really are her daughter.

What the game itself sets up

The Steam store page describes the premise directly: you play as Nima, who has lost all her memories and is being kept in the basement by her mother. To escape, you pass your mom's tests and convince her you are her daughter.

The core loop follows from that. As you explore, you pick up words tied to objects around you — a worn plushie, a locked drawer, an old note — and those words stand in for Nima's thoughts and feelings. To get anywhere, you combine words in her mind, experimenting with pairings to unlock buried memories, then spend the results as dialogue choices during Mom's tests. The page frames the choice bluntly: tell her what she wants to hear, or push her for the truth.

That is the whole reason the name matters. Nima is not a companion, a narrator or a hidden figure — every word in the word library is hers, and every answer you give is her answer.

A note on the spelling

Searches turn up "Nima," "Nema" and "Nemo" for the same character. The Steam store page writes Nima throughout its description, and that is the spelling used here. Some player videos render the name as Nema or Nemo in auto-generated captions, which is where the variants come from. If you are looking for story discussion, search all three.

What players have pieced together from the demo

The full game is not out yet, so most character discussion comes from the demo. The demo covers Chapter 1 and roughly half of Chapter 2, according to HO! Games' September 5, 2026 development update on the Steam hub — so treat everything below as a player's reading of an unfinished story, not a confirmed plot summary.

In a story-and-endings explainer on YouTube, the player's account runs like this: the protagonist wakes bound to a chair in a basement with a shadowed figure watching her, and quickly decides to cooperate by accepting the identity of "Nima." The mother is named as Annabelle Lee and the daughter as Nima Lee, and the mother describes a swimming accident that supposedly cost Nima her memory. From there the video reads the mother as a paleontologist who is possessive and controlling, and the protagonist as someone who may be carrying a dead girl's memories rather than being that girl. The explainer's conclusion is that the mother has been running a procedure to bring her daughter back and killing the result whenever it disappoints her, with a parasite-like presence in Nima's head as the mechanism behind the repeated resets — and that the way out is to kill the mother. That is one player's interpretation of the demo's endings, not something HO! Games has confirmed.

Worth knowing: the same explainer flags the demo's darker content — sedation, restraints, and a mother who alternates between affection and violence — which lines up with the mature-content note on the store page about implied violence toward a child, eye mutilation and neglect.

Practical notes

  • A free demo is available from the Steam page, so you can meet Nima without buying anything.
  • As of 2026-10-18, the Steam store page lists a release date of November 27, 2026, after an earlier October 8, 2026 date was pushed back. The same page lists Windows and macOS system requirements.
  • The September 5, 2026 update gives a sense of scale for the finished character: over 230 unique words, more than 5,000 combinations, over 15 tests across 5 chapters plus 7 optional ones, and 13 endings. It also mentions word-library tools — a favouriting list, an available-choices filter for tests, and a history of your last 20 combinations — which matter a lot once Nima's vocabulary grows.
  • Steam Community threads from demo players ask about a safe and about finishing the "Life/Fossil" chapter without a bad outcome, so expect some puzzle-shaped dead ends if you are playing the demo build. Player build numbers are not specified in those threads.
