Am I Nima: How to Get Obsession (Life + Fossil)

Players report Obsession comes from combining Life and Fossil in Am I Nima's word library, plus how the word-combining loop works in the demo.

The short answer

Combine Life with Fossil. That is the pairing players point to when someone asks how to get Obsession in Am I Nima. It comes from the Steam community thread “Just started this game, how did things spiral out of control this quick”, where a player asking “how do i get obsession” is answered with “Life + Fossil.” Treat that as a player-reported recipe rather than an official one — nobody in that thread shows the combination on screen, and the build isn't named.

A second poster in the same thread, newbneet, mentions unlocking Obsession too, but says it happened only after “the hint they gave in the bedroom.” So the bedroom scene appears to be where the game itself starts steering you toward it, which is a decent place to slow down if you're hunting for the word.

How the word library works

Am I Nima builds its dialogue out of words you collect. Clicking objects in the environment adds words to your library, and pairing two words produces new ones — a Chapter 1 playthrough shows early combinations like Nima + Mom producing Family, Fear and Love, and Mom + Love producing Work. The same loop is what eventually produces Obsession: it isn't a pickup lying on a shelf, it's an output of the combining system. A demo write-up on Creeping for Scale Models describes the loop the same way — click items, unlock words, combine them, and use the results as dialogue options.

Getting the two halves

Fossil shows up during the second day's item test, when Nima's mother sets the fossilized rock on the table. The object is generous with words — rock, fossil, work and science all come up around it in the playthrough footage.

Life is the half players are vaguer about. Nobody in the thread says exactly which object gave it to them, so the honest advice is to click through the bedroom thoroughly before the item scene: it's the densest clickable area in the demo, and lines like the jar-of-wishes “purpose in life” remark are the kind of thing that feeds words into the library. That's a suggestion for where to look, not a confirmed pickup point.

If the combination won't fire

  • Check that both Life and Fossil are sitting in your library as words in their own right, not just words you saw appear in dialogue. Combining works on library entries.
  • Don't rush the opening. One player in the thread reports generating around 40 rows — roughly 120 words — before answering any questions at all, and another says nearly every word in the demo can be reached from just the opening Nima and Stranger pair. A wide library is a cheap insurance policy if one pairing seems stuck.
  • If you've already passed the fossil scene, go back to the library and try the pairing again; the thread's own Obsession unlocks happened at different points in different runs.

Scope note

Everything above comes from the demo / Chapter 1 build of Am I Nima — the Steam thread is from March 2025 and the write-ups and videos describe that same slice. The demo wraps up shortly after the bedroom section, so there isn't much runway left once you have Obsession. For anything past that point, the official Steam page is the place to watch.
